In-Cab Human Factors and Real-time Operator Behaviour Monitoring
Designing Safer, Smarter Mining Cabins Through Human-Centred VR and Behavioural Insights
Overview

The project aimed to enhance operator ergonomics within mining cabins by implementing real-time behavioural monitoring and identifying design improvements to boost safety, efficiency, and performance. COOi Studios was engaged to conduct human-centred research and design, using advanced technologies to deeply understand operator needs and challenges in automated mining environments.

The Challenge

In highly mechanised mining environments, operator fatigue, discomfort, and misaligned cabin design can compromise safety and productivity. Anglo American required a solution to identify hidden ergonomic risks and human behaviour issues that could impact operational performance.

The Solution

Using advanced UX research and immersive VR technology, COOi created interactive simulations of optimised cabin layouts and interfaces. This allowed Anglo American stakeholders to evaluate design changes virtually before implementation, ensuring that solutions were grounded in real operator needs.

The Results
  • Uncovered key human factors challenges affecting operator safety and efficiency.
  • Delivered evidence-based ergonomic recommendations to guide design improvements.
  • Enabled design validation via immersive VR walkthroughs, reducing the risk of poor implementation.
  • Contributed to a more resilient and human-aligned operational environment in Anglo American's automated mining cabins.
